Here at New Oxygen, we are proud stockists of Havaianas flip flops and wanted to share with you their history from the humble beginnings on the streets of Brazil , to the high profile catwalks of Milan!

In 1962 the Brazilians invented Havaianas flip flops, taking their design inspiration from Japanese Zori sandals. The name Havaianas (pronounced ah-vai-YAH-nas), Portuguese for Hawaiians, was a tribute to America 's glamorous holiday destination. The main difference of these flip flops was the use of natural rubber in the manufacturing process and what made Havaianas so unique was their durability, comfort and the ease of their production. They were also unisex, broadening their appeal even more. As time went on, these simple flip flops soon took off!

By 1965, Havaianas were selling 1,000 pairs a day – to people in all walks of life – on street corners and in shops all across South America .

The Havaianas ‘Top’ flip flop was designed, giving the sandal an all-over colour and widening its appeal even more. By the late 90’s Havaianas attained a true global appeal, featuring in stylish fashion magazines in the USA and Europe, thus reaching previously unexplored segments of the public and making Havaianas available at the most chic retailers and surf boutiques nationwide.

 

In 1998, the Havaianas ‘ Brazil ’ flip flop was launched to celebrate the World Cup in France . This was to become the most iconic style in the Havaianas range, featuring the Brazilian flag on the strap and the thin stripes running through the sole. A huge range of colours continue to expand the instantly recognisable ‘ Brazil ’ range today.

 

Now referred to as the "best rubber sandal in the world," Havaianas can be seen gracing the pages of the hottest fashion magazines, strutting down the runways at New York Fashion Week and at red carpet events.
